McCloud Falls & offroad detour
2–4 day side trip from Happy Camp · car + 4x4 low range, not lifted
Getting there from Happy Camp
Hwy 96 east → I-5 south at Yreka → Hwy 89 east through Mt. Shasta city to McCloud. From the main intersection in McCloud, drive 5.5 mi east on Hwy 89, turn right at the signed McCloud River Loop / Fowlers Camp turnoff, continue 0.7 mi, then turn left into the Lower Falls picnic area parking. See Discover Siskiyou — McCloud Falls.
Base camp: Fowlers Campground sits between Lower and Middle Falls. The 3-falls trail (Lower → Middle → Upper) is ~3.5 mi one-way along the river; Middle Falls has the best swimming hole.
Offroad options around the falls
1. Lower McCloud River road — FS 38N53 best 4x4 day
From McCloud, ~10 mi south to Lake McCloud (Hawkins Landing), then drop down the dirt road ~7 mi to Ah-Di-Na campground and the Nature Conservancy McCloud River Preserve below it.
Steep, rocky, loose debris, a few hairy sections. High clearance recommended; low range handy on the descent. Trip reports say 4Runners run it in 2H in dry weather — your stock 4x4 with low gear will be fine if you go slow and watch for sharp rocks. No trailers, no sedans.
Beautiful old-growth forest, wild river, classic fly-fishing water. Walk into the Nature Conservancy preserve from Ah-Di-Na.

2. Medicine Lake Highlands loop heat escape
From McCloud, east on Hwy 89 ~16 mi → FS 15 (Harris Spring Rd) ~4.4 mi → FS 49 to Medicine Lake (~45 mi total, mostly paved / good gravel). At 6,770 ft it's cool, with a swimmable sandy beach inside an ancient shield-volcano caldera.
Side spurs are where you'll actually use 4x4 + low range — rough cinder/lava roads to:
- Glass Mountain — huge obsidian flow
- Burnt Lava Flow — recent-looking lava field
- Giant Crater lava tubes
Easy to extend into Lava Beds NM for cave tours (caves stay ~55°F).

3. Around Mt. Shasta itself
- Military Pass / Andesite logging-road loop on Shasta's north side — dirt FS roads, easy-to-moderate, massive Shasta views.
- Everitt Memorial Hwy up Shasta to Bunny Flat (~7,900 ft) — paved, not offroad, but a perfect cool-air sunset drive.
- Castle Lake & Ney Springs just west of Mt. Shasta city — paved to Castle Lake, short hike to Heart Lake; Ney Springs / Faery Falls is a quick stretch-the-legs stop.
Suggested 3-day itinerary
- Drive Happy Camp → McCloud (~4 hr). Set up at Fowlers Camp. Walk Lower → Middle Falls in the evening, swim under Middle Falls.
- Morning at Upper Falls. Then drive the Lower McCloud River road down to Ah-Di-Na — picnic by the river, walk into the Nature Conservancy preserve. Your real 4x4 day.
- Medicine Lake loop with Glass Mountain detour. Stay cool at elevation. Either return to Happy Camp, or push on to Lava Beds NM for a 4th day of caves.
